Heir Quality

Many families do not properly prepare their heirs for significant transfers of wealth. The same way that we are concerned about our “air quality”, the cleanliness of the air we breathe, we should be concerned about our “heir” quality, our heirs’ ability to receive and manage their assets.  To learn more, watch this brief video.

For obvious reasons, all of us are concerned about the cleanliness of the air we breathe. Scientists have used various testing methods to assess air quality for years. And for over four decades, we’ve helped hundreds of our clients who are concerned about their heir quality. That is the quality of their heir’s ability to receive and manage their assets.

Another way of putting it would be to ask how qualified are their heirs to deal with future inheritances. When discussing life insurance and estate planning with our clients, they often tell us they are concerned about leaving their heirs too much. They’re concerned that their wealth will do more damage than good to the next generation. We all know multiple examples where that, in fact, has been the case. One of the biggest questions we get is, “What is the right amount to leave my children and grandchildren?”

In our opinion, we believe the best answer is, whatever you have equipped them to handle. For example, if you’ve equipped your heirs to receive several million dollars, it may not be too much. On the other hand, if you haven’t prepared them to receive $100,000, there may be negative consequences.

And as with air quality, there are ways to measure “heir” quality and things that can be done to improve it. We’ve assembled a collection of articles and books to help give you clarity concerning the status of your current heir quality. In addition, there are tools to give you the confidence you need to build on what you’ve learned. Finally, with your new clarity, you can have confidence, and coordination with your heirs, their advisors and yours, to optimize both your financial and non-financial legacies, thereby maximizing your heir quality.
